S. Richard Rio

October 22, 1945 ~ August 27, 2018 (age 72) 72 Years Old

Tribute

Mr. Sebastian Richard (Rick) Rio Jr., of Annandale, Virginia, born on October 22, 1945 in Washington, DC to S. Richard (Dick) and Minnie Rio, passed away at home at age 72 on August 27, 2018. Rick graduated from Annandale High School in 1963, then went on to graduate from The University of Virginia and from George Washington University for law school. A lifelong resident of northern Virginia, he worked as a tax lawyer for the IRS, and later created his own business, International Architectural Antiques. He spent much time traveling throughout Italy, collecting rare items to bring to the U.S. Later in life, he became a realtor with Long & Foster, specializing in housing for senior citizens.

An avid reader, Rick loved history, poetry, philosophy, architecture, and the Civil War. Music was always on when he was around. He enjoyed many types of music, and went to many concerts. He adored Jerry Garcia - The Grateful Dead was his favorite band.

Rick’s father was from Sortino, Sicily, and Rick had a lifelong love for Sicily and all things Italian, including wine, food, and beautiful women. He enjoyed the outdoors; he loved to visit parks, mountains, and anywhere he could find fresh air and beautiful scenery. Rick also loved wildlife, but even more, he loved cats - cartoons of cats, pictures of cats, and especially his cats that he had for many years.

His nieces always knew him as their silly Uncle Ricky/Uncle Ick; he really signed cards that way. He loved comic strips, Bugs Bunny, and Looney Tunes. He loved telling silly jokes (to kids and adults). His mouth would turn up just slightly at the edges and he would get a twinkle in his eye whenever he was trying to look serious while telling a story that was really a joke.

Rick could always be counted on to be there when you needed him. What he valued most were his family and friends. He made sure to always let you know that you were special to him.

He is survived by his sister, Marlena Rio Powers, her husband, Joseph, nieces Michelle Powers and Stephanie Compean, two great-nephews (Cole and Christian), a great-niece (Liliana), and many cousins (there are too many of you to name!) and friends.

The memorial service will be held on September 9 at Everly Funeral Home, 6161 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, Virginia, 22044. Visitation will be held starting at 3 pm, followed by a service at 5 pm. A gathering will be held after the service at Rick’s home.
