Maria Zakia

Maria F. Zakia, age 91, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on January 5, 2019, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Maria is survived by her Daughter and Son-In-Law, Joanne Monica Kemp and Louis William Kemp II of Charlotte, NC, her Grandson Louis William Kemp III of Charlotte, NC, and her Granddaughter Jana Maria Kemp of Alexandria, VA. She is preceded in death by her Husband Frederick William Zakia and her Father and Mother, Ioannis and Grissanthi Pervana.

Maria was born on February 22, 1927 in Greece and later worked for the Greek Ministry of Finance in Athens.  In 1957, Maria married Frederick (Fred) Zakia. The couple had one child, Joanne, who was born in 1960 in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1961, Maria and Fred permanently relocated to the United States where they initially lived in Rochester, New York and settled in Northern Virginia.

Maria worked in various retail roles throughout the years at E.J. Korvette and Hecht’s department stores. She was a deeply religious woman, continuing to be an active member and volunteer at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church.

Following Fred’s passing in 1987, Maria continued to reside in the family home located in Falls Church, Virginia. In 2016, Maria moved to North Carolina to be closer to her family.

A funeral service is scheduled for 12 noon on January 12, 2019 at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church, VA and will be preceded by a viewing from 11:30 am until 12:00 pm. A burial service will follow for family only at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, where Maria will be laid to rest next to her husband. A reception will be held in the afternoon in Alexandria, VA with more information provided following the church service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Maria’s life. The family would like to thank the gracious staff at Atrium Health and Hospice Services, Bayada Home Health Care, St. Nekarios Greek Orthodox Church, and Robertson Funeral Home in Charlotte and St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church and Everly Funeral Home in Falls Church.
