Wilma Davis Meeker

October 12, 1924 ~ June 10, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Wilma Davis Meeker, 92, passed away peacefully at her home in Alexandria on June 10, 2017.

She was born in Rosedale Kansas in 1924 and she grew up mainly in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from the University of Missouri where she received a degree in Business Administration and Industrial Management in 1948. It was there she met her husband, Brice Meeker, and she accompanied him to England where he attended graduate school at Oxford University. During their time there they saw as much as possible of the United Kingdom and the continent by bicycle and motorcycle. They then moved to Indiana where Brice attended Purdue to obtain his Ph.D. while Wilma worked in the office of the Dean of Women.

After Purdue, they moved to the D.C. area where Brice became a foreign service officer for the USDA. For 30 years Wilma accompanied him to postings in Hungary, Hong Kong, the Soviet Union, The Netherlands, and Australia, managing the social responsibilities demanded by his job. In 1967, Brice was one of two U.S. officials ejected from Moscow in an apparent reprisal for the barring of two Soviet diplomats from the U.S. and Wilma hastily moved the family to The Hague where they spent six wonderful years.  Their adventures around the globe delighted Wilma as she loved exploring new cultures and seeing all the sights she could while making local friends of different nationalities. They raised their two daughters, Kem and Lara to have an appreciation of the world. They retired to Falls Church where Brice died in in 1988.

Wilma volunteered for The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society, and the March of Dimes. For many years, she was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels and an active participant in the Ravenwood Park Citizen Association in Falls Church where she served for many years as their treasurer.

She was also a Cuddler for new born babies in the Intensive Care Unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital and was a long-time member of The Welcome to Washington International Club, Inc., serving as President from 1994-1996. She was a long-time member of the Embroiders Guild of America, serving as Historian for two terms from 2005-2008. One of the her most enjoyable associations was as the troop leader for the Junior Girl Scouts while stationed in The Hague.

Wilma loved playing tennis and was a member of the Golden Racquets Tennis Club in Fairfax for many years. She was forced to give up the game after a tree fell on her in a freak accident which nearly killed her. Although she recovered, she lived with chronic pain for the rest of her life, and she continued participating in many activities, refusing to let the pain define her life.

Her many interests included travel, gardening, needlework, quilting (two of her quilts won awards from the Woodlawn Needlepoint Exhibition), genealogy, sightseeing, going to museums, birding, environmental issues, and tai chi. She moved to the Goodwin House, Alexandria, in 2012 where she volunteered in the library and was involved in many activities including, Wii bowling, Sit and be Fit, Walker Waltzing, and art projects.

She was a member of Dulin United Methodist and especially enjoyed organizing their annual yard sale where she was in charge of the White Elephant room for many years.

She is survived by her sister, Velma Davis Frazer of Oklahoma, her daughter Kem Meeker Morawski and son-in-law Paul Morawski of Silver Spring, Maryland, her daughter Lara Meeker and son-in-law Fred Meeker of Fairfax, Virginia and her four grandchildren, Max Meeker Morawski, Stevia Davis Morawski, Cassie Meeker, and Rebecca Meeker.  She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Brice Meeker, and her brother Charley L. Davis of Oakton, VA.

She will be greatly missed by many friends and family who are so grateful for all her years of love, support, humor, and enthusiasm for life.

There will be a memorial service on June 19, at 1:00 pm at Dulin United Methodist Church, 513 East Broad Street, Falls Church, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403, (410-268-8816) or to Dulin United Methodist Church, 513 East Broad Street, Falls Church, VA 22046.
